Detoxification or detoxication, or just simply detox, is the process of removing accumulated harmful substances (toxins) from the human body.
The benefits of detoxificating the organism have been known since ancient times. Modern medical science recognizes Hippocrates as its father, and it was he who suggested fasting as a means of improving one’s health. The historically earliest known system of medicine in the world, the Indian Ayurveda, utilizes detoxication as a means to treat many different illnesses. Detoxification therefore is not a modern fad, quite the contrary; it is an ancient healing technique with thousands of years of history behind it.
For a long period of time detoxification has been almost forgotten, due to the tendency of modern medicine to promote chemical drugs as a means of combating symptoms. The inability of this methodology to cope with most ailments and the ever increasing number of people suffering from chronic diseases has led a substantial number of health care practitioners to re-introduce the methods of detoxification in today’s medicinal arsenal.
Who needs it?
Detoxification has proven helpful for patients suffering from various types of chronic diseases such as digestive disorders, allergies, diabetes, arthritis, asthma, chronic infections, anxiety and depression, chronic headaches, heart disease. It has proven to be especially beneficial for those with conditions that are influenced by environmental factors, such as cancer for example, but also for allergic disorders or immune system problems that conventional medicine is unable to diagnose or treat. These include chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Last but definitely not least, detoxification can and should be used as a beneficial preventative measure and a tool to optimize overall health and well being, and thus is for everyone!
